This Child's Gonna Live by Sarah E. Wright
This Child's Gonna Live. New York: A Seymour Lawrence Book, Delacorte Press, 1969.
First edition, first printing. Jacket designed by Ron Daino. Set in a fishing village on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Wright’s novel follows Mariah Upshur and her family, as she fights against poverty for their spiritual and physical survival in a starkly beautiful rural landscape. A lost classic much admired by Adrienne Rich and Tillie Olsen, among others. Rich said of it, "This novel changed forever the way I saw the world in which I had grown up. In that sense it changed the way I thought and the way I wrote." The New York Times called it a small masterpiece. It was reissued by The Feminist Press in 2002, but remains not as known as it should be.
Wright was a poet, essayist, journalist and significant contributor to the Black Arts movement and the Harlem Writers Guild.
Very light rubbing at the crown of near fine jacket. Near fine condition.
