The Second Shelf can build or enhance book collections to reflect historically overlooked publications that deserve space on your shelves. We can start a collection of books by women from scratch, or we can survey your current book collection to advise on writers or subjects you might need to obtain a harmonious balance on your bookshelf. We are also happy to source materials for upcoming exhibitions or to support institutional activities and collecting goals.

Books deemed collectible in the rare book trade have, for far too long, reflected a sensibility that favors a patriarchal literary canon. We believe a great bookshelf and book collection is one that is diverse, balanced, and vibrantly reflective of work from a range of writers and backgrounds. 

Building a collection of books is a deeply personal endeavour, and like all good book businesses, we advise our customers to collect what they love.

We are excellent matchmakers for both private and corporate collectors and are happy to consult on a range of collections, not only those with books by women in them. Our goal is to help customers find the books they need to help balance their bookshelves.
