The Hippie Cookbook by Gordon & Phyllis Grabe
The Hippie Cookbook Or, Don't Eat Your Food Stamps. Forrestville, CA: Paisely Shawl Publishing Co., 1970.
Inscribed by co-author on free front end page to “Sky Sylvio, Keep on Truckin’ - Gordon Grabe” A vibrant purple inked highly illustrated anti-war cookery book with real recipes presented joyfully.
The Grabes had no lack of tongue and cheek in supporting a hippie lifestyle of free love and peace marches. Recipes include simple sustenance for protests, and a more luxurious welfare check day celebration desert, tips for what to make in the nude, references to Alice Adventures in Wonderland for the mushroom recipe. There are instructions on how to cook on the car engine on the road.
The range of recipes also include food for conscientious eaters of all kinds, from vegetarians to activists, providing instructions on how to brown bag it to peace marches. Super fun. A wonderful example of finding joy and life in activism and environmentalism. Lively range of illustrations used, from clip art, to fine art, from photography to line drawings. A cookbook that truly highlights the best of the hippie era.
