Fourth Edition of Lady Willoughby’s Diary, a novel published first in 1844 anonymously and purporting to be an authentic 17th century diary. The book gained a huge readership and was widely debated for its authenticity. Readers speculated on the identity of Rathbone, and most suggested it was written by popular male authors of the day. A 19th century literary scandal! The third edition has a note from publisher and author asserting the authenticity of the book. Rathbone had been inspired by her father’s library, reading many histories and memoirs, which lead he to the spirited idea to pen a fictional version of her own.

Bookplate of Lord Raglan to the verso of the front board. Binder’s stamp to base of front endpaper “Bound by Hayday.” Pencil signature to top of title page “Georgina Lygon.” Full-page coat of arm to the verso. All other pages lined border and dates in a marginal column. English text throughout.

Original marbled endpapers. In very good condition. A pretty book.
