Mrs. Warren's Daughter: A Story of the Women's Movement by Sir Harry Johnston

£80.00

A suffrage novel and story of the women’s movement by Sir Harry Johnston, a botanist and writer who was a part of the science community and learned literary set in London, and whose narratives reflect post-Darwinian ideas. Mrs. Warren’s Daughter is a continuation of George Bernard Shaw’s controversial play Mrs. Warren’s Profession about Vivie Warren, who in the play had cast off her inheritance learning it came from her mother, Kitty Warren’s, brothel business. Johnston wrote to Shaw and received permission to tell the story of Vivie’s personal and political involvement in the Suffrage movement.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1920. 19 x 13 x 3.5. 402 pages. First Edition. Red boards, 402 pages. A presentation copy from the author's wife Winifred Johnston. No dust jacket. Very good.
