Women's Yellow Pages San-Francisco - East Bay, Set of the first 3 volumes 1976-1978
In Spring 1976 the East Bay Women’s Yellow Pages Collective, an open member association put into motion by a group called the Slightly Older Lesbians, printed the First Edition local Women’s Yellow Pages in an edition of 10,000 copies. These copies were distributed for free, and the collective members were almost volunteers, seeing 60 cents per hour for their labour.
The Second Edition was Fall 1976, with the Third Edition in 1977. Whilst “free” gave way to “suggested donation” and then a price of 50 cents, the purpose, layout, and style remained rooted in the Collective’s experiences. The Yellow Pages’ sections began with Women’s Centers and Refuges, then Politics and Education, then The Printed Word, before continuing to arts, health, childcare, business services etc. From the first an indication was offered if the listing was wheelchair accessible, and the later Editions also indicated step free access and in-home services.
All three Editions are illustrated and the illustrators credited. Each volume contains an essay on the process and exact finances of production.
All three volumes have stapled bindings and are in very good condition, with some age toning to paper. The mailing address of the Berkeley’s Women’s Center is commonly used, but the publisher was the East Bay Women’s Yellow Pages Collective.
