Tigers are Better Looking is a shattering collection of short stories, many written during the long period of undeserved obscurity between Rhys’s early novels and Wide Sargasso Sea.
Rhys was a writer who dissected loneliness in perfect prose, and this collection of stories written between the 1920s and 1960s features young women, alone and unmoored. At the age of 80, Rhys inscribed the book in noticeably shaky handwriting to Neville Braybrooke. Braybrooke wrote at least three articles on Rhys including “The Return of Jean Rhys”.
