A surreal short story about angels, and Baudelaire, set in Africa, a continent that Spark traveled through and lived in during her married life, and a place she wrestled with, she ridicules the racism of colonial characters, and yet it also upholds colonial attitudes in parts. The story helped launch her literary career.
