First edition, third printing. Rebecca West’s substantial two-volume masterpiece documenting her journey to Yugoslavia ostensibly on a trip for the British Council.
West’s striking and poignant recording of the country in pre-war days. Dedicated “To Friends in Yugoslavia Who Are Now All Dead or Enslaved.” End pages show the chronology of West’s journey in red ink on a map of the region.
Full green cloth. Titles in gilt. Small repair to tear on front jacket with tape. Some wear to jacket spine at to and bottom and spine edges, but in otherwise good condition. Crease in Volume 1 corner of back board, some wear at edges. Spine block sturdy but read carefully. Two ownership inscriptions to front title page. Two tiny chips to Vol II jacket, one 1 cm tear at bottom spine. Pinprick-sized hole on rear jacket at spine. Very good books in very good condition.A nice set of a modern classic.
