Friendly Female Society Wisbech Instituted February 1st, 1796 [card]
£60.00
Friendly Societies began in the eighteenth century and were widespread. A small percentage of the societies were for women, a welcome alternative to uncertain charity or poorhouses. Whilst not dating to 1796 itself, this card is a reminder of the importance to women of Friendly Societies, or mutual aid societies, prior to the establishment of Welfare from the state. Women from Wisbech paid a regular subscription and were entitled to payment from the organisation in times of hardship.
9 x 6 cm ivory card.
