From The Center: Feminist Essays on Women’s Art
New York: E. P. Dutton, 1976. First edition. From The Centre is a collection of essays on women’s art from a feminist perspective. Lippard reflects on the five years after the publication of her last book, Changing (1971), and notices the way in which the Women’s Movement and feminism have changed her life; her self-consciousness and self-perception, her relationship to her own writing and her relationship with art and the art world, allowing her to develop critical writing that is involved, emotional and personal. This book is divided in two parts. The first includes general essays on topics related to art and feminism, such as sexual politics and “female imagery”. The second is composed by artist monographs, including names like Judy Chicago and Louise Bourgeois. Each chapter is accompanied by black and white photographs of the artists and their work. The book is complete with 9 colour plates.
