Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter
Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter
Chatto & Windus-Hogarth Press, 1984. First Edition.
8vo. 295pp. Publisher’s original red cloth titled in gilt to the spine, minor edgewear, a very good copy indeed in a similarly clean and bright copy of the dustwrapper, an almost entirely unblemished copy. Internally clean, although the notoriously poor paper stock of the page block has toned slightly as usual. Inscribed by Angela Carter to the front flyleaf: “To Chris and Lisa, with Love from Angela, November ‘84”
The recipients are Christopher Priest, and Lisa Tuttle, the noted science fiction author who at that point were a married couple. Also laid in is a compliment slip fron Chatto and Windus, dated on the publication date and inscribed by Carman Callil, at that point the Managing Director of Chatto, but mainly famous for being the founder of the legendary Virago Press, and being an absolute powerhouse of feminist publishing. One of Angela Carter’s most successful works, rightly so, and a great association.
