Miscellanies in Prose and verse by Mary Jones

£1,200.00

Oxford, 1750. First edition. Miscellanies was published by subscription for the author in 1750, in order to raise funds for a relation of Jones fallen on hard times. The 46 page list of supporters begins with the Princess of Orange, to whom the book is dedicated, and includes the nobility and scholars with whom Jones’ was well-acquainted. Jones corresponded and visited from her base at Oxford, living with her brother who was Chanter of Christ Church Cathedral (earning her the playful nickname ‘The Chantress’ from Samuel Johnson) and she held the post of Postmistress. Through her connections Jones was a keen and privileged observer with a sharp wit; in the prose piece ‘Abstract of an Order of Convocation in relation to Melissa's taking off Medals, &c. in Paper' Jones imagines a woman taking a degree from Oxford. Her poetry ranges from satirical and bawdy to generous and sincere, particularly about friendship, and the letters printed include many to her friends Charlot Clayton and Hon. Miss Lovelace. This copy has been signed by Vincent Kent Hinton Berkshire to the front and back pastedowns. Another owner’s name is neatly inscribed on title page.
