Children in Uniform by Christa Winsloe
Children in Uniform by Christa Winsloe
An English language adaption of the play Gestern und heute, which is about a young lesbian’s feelings for her schoolteacher, and which tragically result in suicide. The play was produced at the Dutchess Theatre London in 1932. Earlier it was produced as a film, Mädchen in Uniform, with an all female cast, directed by Leontine Sagan. The film was heavily censored for decades following its release and Winsloe lived in exile, continuing to write plays with lesbian and and gay themes. Winsloe and her partner Simone Gentet fled Germany to France and joined the French Resistance. They were murdered in France in 1944, just at the time of the liberation. Children in Uniform is an important work.
