The King of Folly Island and Other People by Sarah Orne Jewett

£260.00

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1888.

First collected edition of eight short stories, some of which had previously appeared in Harper’s Magazine, Scribner’s, and The Atlantic. “A Village Shop” is here printed for the first time. The volume is dedicated to John Greenleaf Whittier, an American Quaker poet and antislavery abolitionist who is frequently listed as one of the fireside poets. Jewett herself was "never overtly religious," but joined the Episcopal church in 1871, and she maintained an interest in the teachings of the eighteenth-century Swedish scientist and theologian Emanuel Swedenborg.

“She had kept her own secret and in this earthquake of a moment was clearly conscious that she was a hero enough to behave as if there had never been any secret to keep”.
