Angela Carter’s unnerving post-nuclear war novel following Marianne, the daughter of an academic who lives in a semi-protected seemingly semi-civilised community, as she leaves home out of boredom and falls into a cultish tribe where she is sexually assaulted and impregnated.

In The New York Times Richard Boston called Heroes & Villains “a strange, compelling book” and noted that it was both like a Jane Austen novel and also an American Western. A harder-to-find Carter.
