An Atlas of Europe made by Frances Payne, a student of geography in 1836, when detailed mapmaking was not a commonly taught skill to young women. Fine lettering and detailed maps in ink and watercolours beautifully done. Title page plus 13 full page coloured and labeled maps, each with tissue guard and facing full page text. The descriptions of the countries reflect the knowledge and beliefs of Payne's teachers and contemporary student books such as George Robert's The Elements of Modern Geography from 1834.

28 x 22 x 1cm. Morocco quarter binding with gilt decorations to spine, modern endpapers indicate a more recent binding or rebinding. 26 pages of manuscript and maps, plus title page. In excellent condition.
